SALT LAKE CITY — Two local designers want Utahns to get involved in the creative process of designing a new state flag — no artistic ability necessary.
John Dilworth and Rob Foster created flagmachine.com after Gov. Spencer Cox announced the state’s “More than a Flag” initiative earlier this year.
“The idea wasn’t really to say what the flag would be,” Dilworth said. “We really need to see a lot of ideas of what it could be.”
Want to design your own state flag? You’ve got until April 30th to tell Utah’s leaders what you’d like to see on a new banner and the guys at @theflagmachine want to help you create something special! Story this morning on @KSL5TV #KSLTV – Mine has delicate arch 🤔 pic.twitter.com/aasM2M7M6v

Dilworth and Foster will get a lot of ideas, too, because the site starts visitors off with 50 basic flag designs that can be customized with seemingly endless possible icons, shapes and colors — you’re the artist and designer of your Utah flag.
People are already getting in on the flag fun — one of the big reasons for the redesign is so that people want to say loud and clear: “We’re from Utah!”

“I don’t look around and see the Utah flag being worn on people’s t-shirts, on stickers, on their cars or anything, not any of that stuff,” Foster said. “We love our state and we want it to be represented well.”
The official site to submit your designs to the state is flag.utah.gov and the deadline is April 30.
