OGDEN — James W. Wood, a 64-year-old husband, caregiver, father and grandfather, was killed Friday while walking his dog, according to his family.
Ogden police identified Wood as the victim of a crash near 20th Street and Harrison Boulevard.
Police said they believe the driver who caused the crash, Tyson Bryce Treasure, 26, initially showed up at Ogden Regional Medical Center intoxicated. However, Treasure reportedly refused detox treatment and fled the hospital in a Silver Dodge Ram truck.
Meanwhile, about five miles away, Wood took his dog out for a walk just before 5:30 p.m. He didn’t take his phone or wallet with him, according to his brother, Jack Wood.
After a series of other crashes where Treasure allegedly rammed multiple vehicles, he arrived at the intersection Wood was walking in. When Wood crossed, Treasure rammed a Tesla and a Honda at a red light, causing the Honda to hit Wood.
The driver of the Honda sustained severe facial injuries, and Wood was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead before the hospital staff could even identify him, Jack Wood said.
James Wood’s family suspected something might be wrong when his dog arrived back home without him about an hour later. Jack Wood said the family called the police, and two crisis workers immediately came to meet with his wife, who is disabled.
“When they were given his description they were able to give her the bad news,” Jack Wood said. “What a shock — now what do we do? He was her caregiver.”
Jack Wood said his brother is survived by his wife, three children, all grown and married, and a dozen grandchildren.
“It’s a horrible shock for all of us,” he said.
