SALT LAKE CITY — One man is in critical condition after he approached an officer who was performing a traffic stop with a weapon, prompting the officer to shoot, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Public Information Officer Michael Ruff with SLCPD said just before 2 a.m., an officer performed the stop near 375 S. 765 West. Ruff said a 32-year-old man approached the officer with some kind of weapon and there was an “altercation.”
The officer then fired shots, hitting the man. He was rushed to the hospital.
Ruff said the driver of the car in the traffic stop had no relation to the incident.
Unified Police Department was on the scene as the “officer-involved critical incident protocol” was enacted.
“This was a dynamic event and it unfolded rapidly. Our officer had to take very quick action …” Ruff said.
