CANNONVILLE, Utah — You could spend months in Garfield County and still not see it all.
Highway 12 alone has Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and several other amazing places to see between Panguitch and Torrey.
“There is also Kodachrome State Park and Mossy Cave,” Hal Feinberg said. “There are slot canyons and hoodoos and beautiful red rock for miles “
Feinberg is learning all about what to see in the area. And what he has built in Cannonville, which is about 15 minutes from Bryce Canyon, is a site in itself.
“I love it when people come here. Their faces just go from here to wow! Their jaws drop and that’s just what’s best for me is to see their reactions when guests walk in,” Feinberg said.
They are amazed because there is a good chance they have never seen something like this place. ”It is the first and only glass dome hotel in America,” Feinberg said.
It’s called Clear Sky Resorts, a luxury glamping site that just opened this past summer.
Twenty-five glass geodomes are open now. with more planned to be built and ready by March.
There is also a restaurant, activities, and tours, and inside the domes, everything you would find in a regular hotel room with views that make you stop and stare.
The showers alone might be worth the visit.
“We put a lot into them to make it like what you find in a 5-star resort,” Feinberg said. “We want this place to be an escape for our guests. With everything going on in the world, if they can escape reality for a few days and kind of get away from real life, that’s the goal.”
For as interesting and unique of an experience as this resort is, the real magic of it all is at night.
“You can lay in bed and just be in awe of looking up and seeing Orion’s Belt or whatever it is and you can see it clearly,” Feinberg said.
The area is Dark Sky designated, meaning on a clear night it feels like you can see every star.
The resort also offers an astronomy program for guests to see planets and constellations. Once you go to bed, the stars are still visible above you because of the glass domes.
“Sleeping in what I call an aquarium of stars where you look up and you can see a shooting star,” Feinberg said.
Rooms start at a few hundred dollars a night, but the resort sold out for a couple of weeks during the holidays. It is proof there is a market for a luxury resort in the area.
The new resort also means a lot of extra tax money for Garfield County, especially with plans for it to be year-round.
“The Amazing thing is we’ve spent so many years just being kind of a summer destination. We’re now kind of seeing that full year-round destination,” Director of Garfield County Tourism Falyn Owens said.
A Spring Hills Suites is also being built by Bryce Canyon. It adds more rooms to an area near Ruby’s Inn, which has been open in the area for decades Nd continues to be a popular place for tourists to relax, eat, and take guided trips.
The growth and added attention to the area is also proof it’s on the verge of growing even more with tourism.
“We’re getting there,” Owens said. “We still don’t have the international visitation that we had pre-COVID, but it’ll happen.”
Places like Clear Sky Resorts will only help bring more visitors to the area where they might end up staying for longer than they originally planned.
“You can come here and make it your home base and just see what I think is the prettiest county in the U.S.,” Feinberg said.
There is definitely a lot to see.
