OGDEN — One man is dead and another is critically injured after a shooting in Ogden Sunday morning near the 700 block of 30th Street.

Ogden police said a suspect was taken into custody Sunday night after hours of searching for him. The suspect was identified on Monday afternoon as 19-year-old Ricardo Caballero.

The victim hospitalized was revealed as Caballero’s older brother, who he says was shot by accident.

The investigation

At 10:46 a.m., police said they were called about a shooting and began searching for the suspect near 30th Street and Madison Avenue.

When they arrived, officers said they found the first victim’s body. Caballero’s brother, was found injured nearby.

Police said he took himself to the hospital, escorted by police, and was then taken into surgery.

Officials revealed on Monday afternoon in a court document that Caballero and his brother had planned to meet and fight with another person over a disagreement that Sunday morning.

The document stated that several other people showed up to fight, which Caballero and his brother were not expecting. Caballero told police that he felt his life was in danger.

According to the document, Caballero said he pulled out his gun and first fired at the two people closest to his brother. Though, he realized when his brother cried out in pain that he had accidentally hit his brother.

The document says Caballero made inconsistent remarks about the second shot he fired. First, he said he fired at someone advancing towards him, and then he said the person was actually running away. Later he said he actually only meant to fire “warning shots.”

The second person he hit was the victim found deceased at the scene. Police said there was no evidence that any of the others at the scene had any weapons on them, and Caballero told them he did not see any either.

Caballero was booked into Weber County Correctional Facility on charges of aggravated murder, and two counts of felony discharge of a weapon.

Response from neighbors

Esmeralda Marquez lives in the neighborhood with her family. She said she came home from breakfast to a lot of commotion on her street.

“I was out having breakfast with my mom and then I came home and I seen them, and I tried looking through my camera, and then I saw at 10:44, I heard the gunshots,” she said.

The surveillance camera on her house recorded six gunshots fired off in rapid succession, in broad daylight, though the police documents only accounted for two.

“I didn’t know what to think,” Marquez said. “I’m like, what’s going on?”

Investigators blocked off the area, in front of Marquez’s home, while they searched for evidence and looked for the suspect.

“There was just tape all over the place and a lot of police officers,” Marquez said. “They came to talk to me too. And they asked me for my footage and I provided it.”

Though police said there was no threat to the public, Marquez said it concerns her that this shooting took place in her neighborhood, where a lot of young children live.

“It’s crazy because my kids are always playing outside and I was glad they were not outside, they were sleeping,” Marquez said. “It could’ve been worse. Now, I’m scared. I’ve got to take care more of my kids and not let them wander.

Ogden City Police are asking the public for any additional knowledge not listed to be reported to Weber Dispatch on their non-emergency line at 801-395-8221.
