Only Special Session Can Delay Collection Of Utah Sales Tax From Businesses

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah State Tax Commission said there will not be any changes to the collection of state sales tax until after the state legislature can meet for a special session.

Commission officials said they have been approached by multiple small businesses and asked to delay sales tax collection. However, those small business owners will have to continue following state tax law as is until the Utah Legislature can meet in a special session and make a decision on how to move forward.

According to the commission:

The Utah State Tax Commission has been approached by a number of merchants who collect sales tax, with concerns about the ability to file returns and remit the sales tax on time at the end of this month due to the impacts of COVID 19. In this regard, we have been asked by legislative leadership, with concurrence of the Governor’s office, to defer any action on addressing COVID 19 impacts on sales tax until after the legislature can meet in special session later this month.

A date for a special legislative session has not been set.
