SALT LAKE CITY – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about scam callers impersonating law enforcement and asking for payments to be made over the phone.
In a post on Facebook, the Sheriff’s Office warned the community that scammers have been successful at convincing victims they owe money for missing jury duty, missing other court-related appointments, or that they have a warrant out for their arrest. The scammers will then tell people they need to pay a fine over the phone to clear the issue.
“(Thieves) trying to scam people out of their money is not a new thing, but it is alarming that people keep falling victim to these scumbags,” the post read.
What to do
If you receive a call from anybody who asks for payment over the phone or for personal information, the Sheriff’s Office said the best thing to do is hang up.
“The scammers are very skilled and they sound very convincing,” the post read. “Be safe! HANG UP and call whoever they say they are representing and get confirmation before paying anyone over the phone.”

The Sheriff’s Office warned that the scam callers have proven to be very successful, and urged the community to avoid falling victim by being assertive and hanging up the call.
“If someone calls you and asks you for personal information or money, you can assume it is a scam 99.9999% of the time,” the post read.
Finally, the post disclosed that the Sheriff’s Office and the court would never call someone and demand money over the phone.
