SALEM, Utah County — A Utah teen died Tuesday night after a motorcycle crash sent him to the hospital in critical condition. According to the Salem City Police Department, he died the next day in the hospital.

The victim’s family identified him as Riley Smith. According to them, Riley survived cancer as a child and had his

According to SCPD, the crash occurred just before 7 p.m. Monday on 340 South and Woodland Hills Drive in front of Valley View Middle School. The teen riding the motorcycle and a passenger car collided as the car attempted a left turn.\

Police said the crash is still under investigation.

Riley was taken to Primary Children’s Hospital by LifeFlight, SCPD said. According to his family, first responders put a tourniquet on his right arm which was nearly amputated. He also had a broken wrist, and numerous internal injuries including his spleen, a brain bleed and an arterial bleed in his neck. He also had a broken pelvis and two broken legs.

The family said there were more injuries doctors didn’t get the chance to assess, because despite their efforts in a 10-hour surgery, Riley’s body “just could not keep up with the extensive injuries and he passed away.”

“Riley’s parents, Chris and Brandy Smith, along with their other son, Hunter, who was Riley’s best friend are completely devastated,” a family member wrote. “The family would like to thank all of the first responders, and the entire community, for everything they did for Riley in attempt to save his life.”

Riley’s family and friends set up a *GoFundMe to help his family with costs during their time of need.
