UPDATE — One of the young people who fell through the ice, a 14-year-old,  was rushed to the hospital Monday evening. On Tuesday morning, Ogden police said the teen died there.

The original story published by KSL TV is as follows:

SALT LAKE CITY— Two teenagers were rescued after falling through ice at an Ogden pond on Monday.

At 4:30 p.m., emergency crews received a report that two teens had fallen through the ice.

Ogden Police Department Lt. John Cox said that two teens, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, were fishing at Glassman Pond in Ogden. Authorities currently are unsure if the teens were fishing on the ice or from the shore when they fell in.

Two other teenagers who were fishing at the pond worked to help rescue them from the freezing water. They told KSL TV they didn’t really notice the pair until they heard them fall through the ice and yell for help. That’s when they, along with two other teens, jumped into action.

Major Nicholls and Jessie Johnson said they worked fast while they tried to get the two who fell in, all while trying to stay safe.

“They started drifting out a little bit so I just stood up because we couldn’t get out there,” Nicholls said. “And it was hard because we just had to watch for a minute because we couldn’t do anything because it was too far out.”

Johnson then called 911, and the boys grabbed their fishing rods. The 15-year-old who fell in the water was able to grab onto a fishing rod and kick until he was pulled out of the pond, Nicholls and Johnson told KSL TV.

According to Mike McBride with Ogden City, the first teen who was rescued has mild hypothermia. He is expected to recover fully.

Dive teams continued to search for the 14-year-old, who was later found and removed from the water at approximately 7 p.m. He was then flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.
