GREEN RIVER, Emery County — A man and woman and their dog were killed in a crash after attempting to pass two cars while driving at high speeds, Utah Highway Patrol says.

On Thursday, at approximately 5:11 p.m., a UHP trooper reported that a white BMW SUV passed him going 128 mph eastbound on Interstate 70 near mile marker 135.

UHP reported that the trooper pulled out of the median and attempted to catch up to the vehicle but was unable to and radioed an Emery County Sheriff’s deputy about the BMW.

According to UHP, the BMW passed the deputy, who activated his emergency lights as the vehicle passed him. The deputy reported that the BMW did not slow down.

“Near milepost 160, the BMW attempted to pass two vehicles occupying lanes 1 and 2,” the UHP press release stated. “When it did so, it left the roadway to the left, went through the median, and onto lane 1 of westbound I-70. It then overcorrected right, went back through the median, began to roll, and jumped onto eastbound I-70, where it struck a commercial vehicle pulling a flatbed full of drywall materials.”

UHP said the BMW rolled back onto the road and stopped, blocking both eastbound lanes.

According to UHP, 26-year-old Mathew Koehler of Las Vegas, Nevada, was the driver, and 34-year-old Jasmine Green of Henderson, Nevada, was his passenger. Police said the two and their dog were ejected from the car and killed.

Police believe no one was wearing their seatbelts in this crash and are still investigating.
