BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah – A Utah Highway Patrol sergeant is recovering Saturday after being struck by a truck while in his patrol car.
Newly released dash cam video shows the impact.
According to Utah Highway Patrol, Sgt. Brian Nelson was covering a third crash on Saturday around 1:20 p.m. at the 1-15 northbound Portage exit area.
The crash involved vehicles that were traveling too fast in the rain and crashed into the cable barrier in the median, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Nelson was inside his patrol car and, “Plymouth Fire was set up behind him with their lights going to give an early warning until a second trooper could arrive,” according to a press release by DPS.
At about 1:36 p.m. a white 2017 Dodge pick-up truck lost control as it passed the firetruck and slid sideways from the outside lane into the inside lane striking the passenger rear corner of Nelson’s Dodge Charger patrol vehicle, according to the press release.
The truck then continued to spin and crashed into the driver’s side of the previously crashed SUV.
The truck came to a final stop about 50 yards north of the original crash scene.
Nelson was transported to the hospital with serious neck pain.
According to the press release, he was treated and released from the hospital.
In the meantime, Utah Highway Patrol is reminding driver’s to drive cautiously in bad weather.
