Washington, D.C. – Utah Senator Mike Lee headed south Thursday to get a firsthand look at the growing immigrant crisis at the U-S Mexico border.
A dozen other GOP senators took the trip with him to look at facilities that are currently being overrun with a surge of immigrants, mostly unaccompanied children.
Lee addressed the Senate floor Wednesday to explain a plan that he said would slow the flood of immigrants.
Part of his statement was in Spanish aimed directly at Central American families.
Lee said, “Please do not send your wives and daughters on this journey only to be sexually assaulted by the coyotes and cartels. We hear story after story of smugglers kidnapping women and children and holding them hostage even after they cross our border.”
1/2 Today I proposed immediate, common-sense reforms that would help stem the flood of immigrants at our border and protect vulnerable women and children from the clutches of the cartels and coyotes. Sadly, it was blocked by Senate Democrats. https://t.co/TpsD56jLHa

The Biden administration has come under fire over the large number of children crossing the border and the transparency over where and how the U. S. is caring for those kids.
During his first news conference as President on Thursday, Biden said a surge of children to the border happens every year at this time.
President Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead efforts to reduce migration across the border.
