‘Hamilton,’ ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Among Shows Coming To Broadway At the Eccles

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A show that took Salt Lake City by storm in 2018 will return to the Eccles Theater in time for Christmas.

“Hamilton: An American Musical” is among seven season offerings coming to Broadway at the Eccles in the 2020-21 season.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical will have a monthlong run in Salt Lake City.

But that’s not the only show expected to draw a crowd during the 30^th anniversary season.

The season subscriber lineup also includes “Mean Girls,” “The Band’s Visit,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Two classic musicals are also returning to Salt Lake City as season add-ons: “Chicago,” and “Les Misérables.”

“Thirty years after making it’s Salt Lake City debut on our very first season, ‘Les Miz’ is still Utah’s favorite musical,” said Bruce Granath, vice-president of the Mountain Region of Broadway Across America.

Season ticket holders can renew online starting today, by calling 801-355-5502, or by visiting the season ticket box office located at 610 E. South Temple, M-F 9am-5pm. The can also purchase tickets to “Chicago” and “Les Misérables” as soon as they renew their subscription.

Those wishing to become season subscribers may join the 2020-21 waitlist on the Broadway at the Eccles website. Those on the waitlist will get priority information when season tickets go on sale to the public.

“Mean Girls”
August 25-30, 2020

Social drama inside the halls of a high school. Fans of Tina Fey’s 2004 movie “Mean Girls” will get a chance to see Cady, a naïve newbie, take down Regina George and the Plastics in a Tony-nominated musical adaptation. Fey wrote the book for the musical. Her husband Jeff Richmond was the composer.

“The Band’s Visit”
September 22-27, 2020

The story of an Egyptian police band that is accidentally sent to a small village in the middle of the Israeli desert after a mix-up at the border. The show won 10 Tony Awards after making its Broadway debut in 2017, including Best Musical. Stranded without a hotel, the band members are taken in by the locals, forming unexpected connections.

The longest-running American musical in Broadway history brings its razzle-dazzle to Utah once again. Winner of six Tony Awards, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly headline a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz.

“Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”
November 17-22, 2020

Based on the beloved 1964 novel by Roald Dahl, featuring Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket and the much sought after golden ticket. The musical features songs from the 1971 film as well as new music from the songwriters behind “Hairspray.”

“Ain’t Too Proud”
February 2-7, 2021

The musical portrays The Temptations’ journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during a decade of civil unrest. It features many of the group’s favorite hits, including “My Girl,” and “Papa Was Rolling Stone.”

“Jesus Christ Superstar”
March 30 – April 4, 2021

Before “Phantom of the Opera,” Andrew Lloyd Webber made a name in the theatrical world with this rock opera based on the week leading up to the crucifixion. The national tour revival marks the 50^th anniversary of the production.

“Les Miserables”
May 4-16, 2021

Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the tale of redemption and forgiveness was first performed in French in 1980 before the English adaptation opened in London in 1985. Since then, it has thrilled audiences around the world and made Jean Valjean, Javert and Cosette household names. Winner of 8 Tony awards, including Best Musical in 1987.

“To Kill A Mockingbird”
August 3-8, 2021

All rise for Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning story. Aaron Sorkin, the award-winning writer behind “The West Wing” and “The Newsroom,” first staged his adaptation on Broadway in 2018. The traveling cast will feature Richard Thomas in the role of Atticus Finch.
