Courtney Johns
Courtney Johns lives by the idea that a journalist’s job is to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” She knew she was home the moment she came to Utah, and she is dedicated to helping her community by uncovering crucial stories that matter. Passionate about giving a voice to the voiceless, Courtney strives to ensure that every story she tells has a meaningful impact.
An Emmy Award-winning journalist, Courtney has earned several awards for both her investigative work and the shows she has anchored. The Utah Society of Professional Journalists has honored her in several categories, most recently for her work on an investigative franchise she led called “The Justice Files.” This segment focused on getting answers for victims and their families and asking tough questions to those in power. Her extensive work included taking a critical look at how authorities respond to domestic violence calls and how a man charged several times with crimes against children continued to have his cases dismissed under Utah’s competency laws.
Before coming to Utah, Courtney worked in several markets in the Midwest, including Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. During her time in Nebraska, she anchored the evening news and led the investigative team. She produced a series on a local daycare with a history of inspection issues, leading to its emergency closure and the arrest of three people. Courtney also led a popular franchise called “Restaurant Report Card,” highlighting local businesses in violation of health inspection standards and awarding the “Clean Plate Award” to spotless restaurants. She covered unique experiences and personalities in a segment called “Courtney’s Corner”, going on a variety of adventures from log rolling to driving a horse carriage downtown.
A passionate outdoor enthusiast, Courtney loves skiing, snowboarding and hiking. She started skiing at the age of 2 and was the captain of her downhill ski racing team in high school. She recently competed in her first pond skim in Utah (spoiler alert: she didn’t make it). Her love for exploring the outdoors is one of the many reasons she loves living in Utah.
When she’s not working, she enjoys discovering new trails and volunteering at local animal shelters, where she adopted her fur baby, Cojo.
