SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is providing supplies and aid after devastating earthquakes on Monday in Turkey and Syria according to a KSL.com report.

The church said it is “committed to helping Turks and Syrians recover and rebuild.” It is sending an initial shipment of food, clothes, blankets, medical supplies, medicine, shelters, water, and sanitation kits, according to a news release.

This aid is in collaboration with relief organizations already present in both countries, and the church is reviewing more organizations to expand its funds’ reach.

In addition to immediate aid, the church said it is also seeking to help with long-term needs — helping with efforts to rebuild and addressing emotional, spiritual and physical needs.

“As is the case everywhere it has a presence, the Church of Jesus Christ seeks to meet the long-term needs of people affected by disasters,” the news release said.

In response to the conflict in Ukraine, last year the church organized the Europe Central Area Emergency Response Committee, chaired by Elder Rubén V. Alliaud, a general authority seventy. Elder Alliaud said they are mourning with those in Turkey and Syria, and are grateful to be able to join with humanitarian organizations to provide comfort and care.

“If we turn our hearts to serve, we will not only help others but will also strengthen our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ,” Elder Alliaud said. “Our understanding of him and in the power of his Atonement will be greatly increased.”

Members who live in the area are encouraged to find community service opportunities through JustServe.org, a website run by the church. Members and others can also donate to the church’s humanitarian aid fund.
