SALT LAKE CITY — Severe winter weather hit the Beehive State overnight, leading to a messy morning commute and schools moving classes online.

Approximately 4,000 people were without power Wednesday morning across northern Utah, with Rocky Mountain Power crews reporting dozens of smaller outages due to snow.
Salt Lake City police responded to a downed tree and power line near 145 South and 300 East, and officers are reminding the public to never approach or touch a downed tree or utility line.
The Utah Department of Transportation urged drivers to stay home until later this morning if possible, and crews reported powder traffic building at the mouths of Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.
The traction law is in effect for both canyons, and police are enforcing it.
Sgt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol said troopers have responded to over 130 crashes since the snow started falling Tuesday evening.
