SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In the fierce world of new streaming services to watch television and movies, a thoroughbred will enter the race today. It’s expected Apple will unveil a streaming service, competing with the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.
That news comes on the heels of a Deloitte study that finds for the first time, more Americans are paying for a streaming service than for traditional cable or satellite.
In the world of live television, cable and satellite are still king.
But here are options if you want to stream:
- YouTube TV offers up a nice array of channels for $40 per month.
- Sling TV was an early service that made a mark. Now it goes for $40 per month as well.
- Hulu with Live TV is interesting. It’s the most expensive option here at $45 per month, but Hulu has struck deals with more channels and movie rights. They’re also developing more kids programming.
The bottom line if you are paying for one streaming service, yes, you are paying less than traditional cable or satellite.
But there’s a catch. That Deloitte study found the average American is paying for three services. And if you are streaming, you’re also paying for internet service most likely, which averages about $50 per month.
Add those together and you’re paying more than the national average of $64 per month for cable. And you’re missing out on local channels.
