Since 1970, Earth day, the environmentally-friendly holiday, has captured the hearts and attention of citizens across the country. It’s a chance to give back to the world we take from every day. It’s also a time to celebrate the planet that makes life possible. It’s the single most important day to raise awareness about our responsibility to sustain the world for future generations.
On April 22 this year, you can try the following five ways to celebrate Earth Day while making an impact:
1. Plant a Tree or Garden

Trees and plants are a major part of life on earth, and there’s no better way to give back than by planting life itself. It’s estimated that nearly 18 million acres of forests are destroyed each year. Planting a single tree might not seem like much. But if everyone in the United States were to contribute one tree per year, we could replenish nearly 5.4 million acres of trees each year.
2. Switch from Single-Use Plastic

Single-use plastics are devastating to the world’s ecosystems. It’s estimated that 500 million straws are used each day, and many of those end up in oceans and affect marine life. Straws aren’t the only issue, though. Disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, and other one-time use items can largely be replaced with more sustainable options. This year, make the choice to switch to greener options.
You can also buy a recyclable water bottle. Use canvas or paper bags for groceries instead of plastic ones. Swap out plastic straws for stainless steel or bamboo ones. It starts with small changes that can add up to a major impact. The more you do it, the more these choices start to feel like second nature.
3. Conserve At Home

Simple things you can do at home can make a huge difference. Anything from recycling to smart thermostats can minimize your carbon footprint. Because Utah is a desert, one of the best ways you can conserve is by starting with water conservation in your hard. Start by watering your lawn longer, but less frequently. Anywhere between 2-4 times a week is really all you need, but water longer so it goes more deeply.
A great way to take more control of your yard water conservation is with a smart sprinkler timer like the B-hyve by Orbit that can be controlled right from your phone. This little smart timer can actually make adjustments based on the current weather data so that you always get the perfect amount of water to your yard. Sit back and let your yard look beautiful.
4. Clean Up a Highway or Park

Take a vacation day and head to a highway or park in your town that needs a little love. Pick up trash and set aside items that can be recycled. Then, take them to your nearest recycling center and feel good about making your world a better place to live.
5. Take a Hike

There’s truly no better way to celebrate Earth Day than by experiencing the many wonders of nature itself. Go “get lost” in the woods for a couple of hours and appreciate all the earth has given us.
