Volunteers needed as Eagle Mountain prepares sandbags ahead of spring runoff

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — Snowpack hasn’t been an issue lately, but flooding could be a problem once spring rolls around and all of that snow starts to melt.

Eagle Mountain city officials say they need help from the community for flood preparation so they can get ahead of the curve and any potential flooding. This Saturday, they are asking for volunteers to shovel, fill and tie off 4,000 sandbags at 11 a.m.

“Those who have looked at the reports know that we are at 178% of snowfall totals for the average for this time of year, and while we can’t say what that means for this area in the spring, what we do know is that those numbers are really high and we are really interested in being prepared in this community for whatever that means,” said Tyler Maffit, Eagle Mountain city communications manager.

The city is extremely low in its sandbag stockpile right now after heavy rains in December dwindled a third of the city’s sandbag stockpile.

“It’s really important for the protection of private property that we are able to direct where the water goes in our community,” Maffit said. “Not only for the protection of our neighborhoods but for drivability for mobility and for the preservation of land, public and private otherwise.”
