Police investigate homicide in SLC after welfare check

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Salt Lake police said a welfare check led them to discover a homicide scene Monday night. Investigators focused on a home near 1650 West and 500 North, after discovering a 15-year-old girl’s body.
“We got a call of a welfare check at around 3:00 p.m.,” said Sgt. Brandon Shearer with the Salt Lake Police Department. “When the officers arrived, they located a deceased female inside the home.”
Police were not able to say what led them to believe this was a homicide. As of Monday evening, they also did not know how the suspect was able to make it in and out of the home. Investigators, along with K-9 units, searched the Jordan River which runs near the home.
“It appears from evidence on the scene that [the homicide] took place probably fairly recently, probably sometime this afternoon,” Sgt. Shearer said.
Police are trying to piece together what exactly happened, focusing their both inside and outside of the home.
“We are going to look at any possible leads that we get and try and work on those and develop those as quickly as possible,” Sgt. Shearer said.
Police said a tip lead them to a person of interest, who they identified as Shaun French, 24. They did not say if the victim knew French.
They said French drives a 1991 Daihatsu Rocky, camouflage in color, with Wyoming plate 19-13974 and could be heading to Wyoming. If you see him, call police. They said not to approach him, because he is considered armed and dangerous.
