Man Faces Expensive Repairs After Weber County Box Truck Gas Thefts

Nov 20, 2018, 11:39 PM

WEBER COUNTY, Utah – A man was trying to figure out who cut into the gas lines of two of his box trucks and then used hoses to siphon out the gas.

Realtor Jarad Winterton said Tuesday he faced hundreds of dollars in repairs due to the thefts, which both occurred within the past week, just off of U.S. 89 near the mouth of Weber Canyon.

“Yeah, it does make me sad,” said Winterton, who offers the brightly-painted trucks to his clients to help with moves. “I just hope that somebody would kind of ask instead of cut.”

Winterton said he believes his white box truck was vandalized and siphoned sometime late Friday into early Saturday morning, and a green box truck received the same treatment early Tuesday morning.

Surveillance video captured an SUV approach and park near the box trucks around 12 a.m. Tuesday, and then takes off after about 25 minutes, according to Winterton.

“What scares me is that looks like somebody’s trying to help somebody, but they’re cutting my lines and taking all the gas,” he said.

Winterton said a hatchet was left at the scene in the second theft, and a garden hose was used to get gas out of the vehicle in both heists.

Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Jensen said a report had been filed and deputies were looking into the case.
Jensen said he wasn’t immediately aware of any other similar crimes in the area.

Winterton said he didn’t have any enemies that he was aware of, and wasn’t sure why his trucks were being targeted, other than perhaps they sat next to a busy road.

“The reason why they’re the bright colors, for me, is a sign of hope,” he said. “This kind of took me down a couple notches.”

Winterton said he believed the SUV may possibly be a GMC Envoy or Dodge Durango, based on how it appeared in the video.
He encouraged anyone with information in the case to call the Weber County Sheriff’s Office at 801-629-8221.
