CEDAR CITY, Utah – Add the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games to the ever-growing list of events that have been called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Although we are deeply saddened by this decision, we feel that it is the best thing we can do for the health and safety of our athletes, spectators and most importantly, our local communities, state and nation,” said Pace Clarke, executive director of the Utah Summer Games in a news release.
Opening ceremonies were scheduled for June 12 with the games set to run from June 1 through the 21.
“We know this is difficult news for athletes across the state and for our local community,” said Southern Utah University President Scott L. Wyatt. “We look forward to welcoming the athletes back next summer.”
Clark added, “We want to encourage each of you to find new ways this year to embrace the mission and spirit of the Games by celebrating excellence in the human spirit and healthy lifestyles.”
The games have been held at Southern Utah University in Cedar City every year since 1986 and attract nearly 10,000 athletes and 30,000 spectators, the news release said.
Registered athletes can get a full refund by emailing usg@suu.edu or calling the main office at 435-865-8421.

How Do I Prevent It?
The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
- Avoid touching your face
- Stay home when you are sick
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
