PROVO — Provo police have arrested a man in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 4-month-old baby. Cameron Willingham was booked into the Utah County Jail Wednesday night on suspicion of child abuse homicide in connection with the death of Nevaeh King.
Sgt. Nisha King says Provo dispatch received a call Monday night about a baby not breathing. When patrol officers responded to the home on Nevada Avenue, police say they found the 4-month-old unresponsive with serious injuries.
Provo Police are not releasing information about who placed the call for help or who lived at the home.
Sgt. King says the baby was taken to Utah Valley Hospital before being flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. She died Wednesday morning due to serious head and neck injuries, as well as abdominal hemorrhaging.
According to court documents, Willingham’s criminal history includes being convicted of assaulting a pregnant person in 2016.
Trisha Creviston of Orem says she considered Nevaeh’s mother her sister. She says they lived together through the mother’s pregnancy and until the baby was about one-and-a-half months old.
Creviston says when the mother and the child moved out, she worried the baby wasn’t in a good situation. She says she even asked to adopt the child. Looking back, she says she wished she could have done more to protect the baby.
When asked about the baby’s mother, police say this is a continuing investigation. In a press release, Provo Police says “We are shocked by the death of a defenseless person, but we want to assure the community that we are carefully investigating the case. We remind people that charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
