REXBURG, Idaho — Recently released police body camera video details another plea for help from Charles Vallow in January 2019, about six months before he was shot and killed by the brother of his wife, Lori Vallow.
The investigations into the deaths of Tylee Ryan, JJ Vallow, Tammy Daybell and Charles Vallow are ongoing. Many question what could have been done to prevent their deaths.
New officer bodycam video shows yet another attempt by Charles to get help.
“She thinks she’s married to Moroni in the past,” Charles said in a video from Jan. 31, 2019. “Married to Moroni on top of the temple.”
These were the concerns Charles Vallow shared with Gilbert, Arizona, officers about his wife Lori Vallow’s mental state.
“I’ve tried to support her as much as I could, but it has gotten really, really bad. She’s had a break,” he said.
It wasn’t just the radical religious beliefs that Lori had adopted.
“And she knows when the second coming is happening next year,” Charles said. “So does the prophet.”
Charles was concerned Lori would take things further.
“She says I’m Nick Schneider,” he said. “I have taken over Charles’ body and Charles was killed.”
He also said Lori told him, “I’m going to kill you. You are going to be murdered today or tomorrow.”
The previous night, Charles had returned home from a trip to find that Lori had taken his truck, locked him out of their home, and left with their children — Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow.
“Canceled my flight. I had to buy another ticket. I have a 6-year-old with special needs,” Charles said.
Charles met with officers outside the hotel where Lori was staying at to have her taken in for a court-ordered psychological evaluation.
“That’s why we need the paperwork in hand, so we can take her,” he said.
But Lori wasn’t at the hotel.
Later that day, she stopped by the police station to file a report after Charles took her purse from her car when she dropped JJ off at school.
Lori alleged Charles was cheating on her, and that was why she had kicked him out.
“I told him about it, told him not to come home and that his stuff would be gone and his car would be gone,” Lori said in the video.
Lori was with Tylee and her friend Melani. She eventually agreed to voluntarily check herself into the Community Bridges mental health facility.
Police records show Lori checked in and was discharged hours later.
“He’s calling all my friends to tell them how crazy I am,” Lori said of Charles.
Charles filed for divorce a week after the January incident. The documents also indicate he filed for custody of JJ and a protection order against Lori Vallow.
Lori’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 9 and 10, while Chad Daybell’s hearing has been rescheduled for early August.
