SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah has vaccinated more than 21,000 additional residents, according to the latest report from the Utah Department of Health.
Unfortunately, five more Utahns have lost their lives to the virus.
Health officials also reported 1,211 more people have tested positive for COVID-19, which brought the 7-day average of new positive tests down slightly.
Testing
UDOH officials reported 2,070,190 Utahns have been tested for the virus, which is 8,264 more people tested than Friday.
Of those, a total of 352,489 have tested positive for COVID-19. That’s an increase of 1,216 cases from Friday’s report.
The rolling 7-day average for positive tests was 1,183 per day — down from 1,216 on Friday — and the rolling 7-day average for percent of positive laboratory tests was 16.2% — down from 16.3% on Friday.
Hospitalizations
There are currently 335 people hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 123 of those people are in intensive care units. Another 84 patients are hospitalized with suspected cases of COVID-19.
ICU utilization was up slightly over Friday’s numbers.
Statewide, 80.4% of all intensive care unit beds were in use, and the ICU beds in Utah’s referral centers were 83.9% full.
Referral Centers are the 16 hospitals in Utah with the capability to provide the best care for patients with COVID-19. Because most patients are transferred to these facilities, their utilization is the best reflection of the true hospital capacity in Utah when looking at ICU beds.
“At about 69% overall ICU utilization, ICUs in Utah’s major hospitals with the ability to provide best care for COVID-19 patients begin to reach staffing capacity,” according to state health officials. “Seventy-two percent use among all hospitals and 77% in Referral Center hospitals creates major strains on the health care system. When 85% capacity is reached, Utah will be functionally out of staffed ICU beds, indicating an overwhelmed hospital system.”
Deaths
An additional five Utahns have lost their lives as a direct result of COVID-19. To date, 1,733 of the state’s residents have been killed by the pandemic.
The following individuals’ deaths were reported Saturday:
- Three females
