MAGNA, Utah — A Utah mother is pleading for help after her son was hit by a truck in a crosswalk and left unconscious on the road last week.
“Have the decency, the courtesy to make sure he’s okay,” said Stephanie Vazquez, whose 15-year-old son Braxton sustained several injuries.
Braxton was with a friend when he was hit on Dec. 30, 2022, at approximately 6:15 p.m. while crossing 8200 West 3500 South.
“The thing told me to walk, and I walked and the truck came out of nowhere,” Braxton recalled.
He said he tumbled under the truck as the truck ripped his sleeve from his body. He remembers the truck having a lift kit on it – before blacking out.
“I remember I hit the floor and the back of my head, and that’s all,” Braxton said.
Witnesses reported seeing the driver take off but stop down the road to check for damage. Something that infuriates Braxton’s mother.
“It’s heartbreaking, especially to know the guy didn’t have any decency to stop and check. I know he knows he hit somebody or she, they know they hit somebody.”
Physically, Braxton is recovering; he has a staple in his head, a brace on his fingers, and the road rash on his arm is healing. But emotionally, the wounds are deeper.
“Thank God he wasn’t killed,” Vazquez said.
Braxton and his mother want answers and for the truck driver to be held responsible. They hope by sharing Braxton’s story; someone will turn the driver or the truck in.
“He hit someone, but he didn’t stop. He just ran away,” Braxton said.
Unified Police responded to the crash but said they had no leads on the driver. They ask anyone with information about the truck or the driver to contact their non-emergency dispatch at 801-943-7000.
