SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Just hours before the polls opened on Election Day, Facebook removed a network of suspicious pages and Instagram accounts.
U.S. law enforcement tipped the company off that these pages could be linked to foreign entities.
A Facebook representative said the company removed 30 Facebook accounts and 85 Instagram accounts.
According to USA TODAY, those accounts were said to be engaging in coordinated activity in French, English and Russian. It raised the possibility of foreign meddling ahead of Election Day.
U.S. officials said there’s no indication that America’s voting infrastructures have been compromised. However, they did warn foreign operatives are trying to influence voters.
A joint statement from the multiple federal agencies involved said law enforcement is working in “unprecedented ways” to combat foreign influence operations.
