Fat Biking Extends Cycling Season To Full Year

PARK CITY, Utah – Mountain biking is no longer just for the summer months.
There’s a growing trend where people can continue riding even after the snow has fallen.
KSL TV’s adventure specialists Trace Worthington and Sean Smith went to Storm Cycles, 1764 Uinta Way, C1, Park City, to learn about fat biking during the winter.
The fat bikes, so named because of the width of their tires, are designed to be ridden on substances like snow or sand.
“They’re much wider than a traditional mountain bike tire,” said Storm Cycles owner Juan Patterson. “That’s to give you the floatation so you don’t knife around in the snow.”
He said the tires are typically ridden on low tire pressure so they get more traction.
“If you can ride a bike, you can ride a fat bike,” Juan said. “It’s just that simple.”
He said there can be some slipping and sliding, since snow doesn’t have the same traction as dirt.
“Don’t panic,” he said. “Just embrace it and let it go.”
