Accusers Say Torrey Green Moved Quickly After First Meeting Them In Sexual Assaults

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah – Two of the women who accuse former Utah State University linebacker, Torrey Green of rape, faced him in court Monday.

Assistant Cache County Attorney Barbara Lachmar said in opening statements that in each case, Green would move quickly after first meeting the women, getting them alone to watch a movie. That’s when Lachmar said the assaults happened. Green’s attorney, Sky Lazaro said they were not cases of rape, but cases of women upset over not getting second dates, and women who waited until after Green had signed a contract with the NFL to go to police.

One woman, told a jury that Green assaulted her while on a date at his apartment. After making her dinner, she says he asked her to come into his bedroom to watch a movie. She says it wasn’t long before Green had started removing her clothes.

“I was telling him to stop, and pushing away,” the woman said, adding that she repeatedly refused his advances, and tried to push Green away.

After the sexual assault, she says Green casually made some comments while watching a YouTube video, as she got dressed.

“He said that he likes really sassy girls,” the woman said. “Because if you try and make them have sex with you, then they won’t let it happen.”

The woman says she tried at first to forget about the assault, but decided to come forward after reading of other rape accusations in 2016. Though she was still hesitant, she says friends encouraged her, though it hasn’t been easy.

“It has been hell in ways I didn’t know it possibly could be,” she said. “Problems in relationships, a lot of drinking, and a lot of, did I say depression already? Definitely something that I would never do again, because it’s been violating and re-traumatizing“

A trauma expert, Dr. Kyle Hancock testified that it is not unusual for trauma victims to “freeze” when they feel threatened. Hancock said it’s also very common for victims to try and avoid reporting the crime.

“In terms of physical aggression and physical violence, it’s very confusing for most victims of acquaintance rape to explain their stories to themselves, let alone to someone else,” Hancock said.

A second woman testified that Green also sexually assaulted her on a first date. She said the trauma eventually made it difficult for her to continue her education at Utah State University.

“I would wake up from nightmares,” she said. “I would double-check, triple-check my doors to make sure they were locked, since I lived alone and I was scared that he would come back, since he knew where I lived.”

The remaining four accusers are expected to testify over the next couple of days. Green’s trial is scheduled to last about three weeks.
