SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Multiple officers have been placed on administrative leave after a string of incidents and a police pursuit ended in the suspect being shot Monday, officials said.

Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Salt Lake City Police Department, Unified Police Department and the Utah Highway Patrol issued a joint statement Tuesday on the officer-involved critical incident. According to the release, 10 SLCPD officers, three UHP troopers and two UPD officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for this type of incident.

UPD received a call just after 10 a.m. Monday that a man with a gun was attempting to steal a case of beer from a Holiday Oil in Taylorsville, authorities said. This kicked off multiple reports of shots fired in the ensuing hour.

Authorities identified the suspect, who was driving a white truck, and pursued him. The suspect reportedly shot at police while fleeing and eventually crashed into a business in the area of 3300 South and State Street.

The officer-involved critical incident followed, and the suspect was killed.

A West Valley City-led protocol team is handling the investigation, according to authorities.
