Riverton City Takes A Stance On Abortion, Passes Unprecedented Resolution

RIVERTON, Utah — City Council members passed the ‘Resolution in Support of Human Life’, an anti-abortion resolution Tuesday night.
City Councilwoman Tawnee McCay sponsored the resolution and said it shows other cities, other states and Utah lawmakers that the council supports human life
“It is expressing our city’s and the majority of our cities view that we want to protect he unborn,” Councilwoman Tawnee McCay said. “It’s not changing city ordinance, it’s not changing state law, it’s just saying that the city council agrees with trying to protect human life.
The two-page resolution has no legal authority. It does have language that expresses the city’s opposition to any efforts that would deny health care providers the opportunity to object to performing an abortion on ‘moral grounds’, among other things.

Riverton City residents packed the city council meeting voicing their opinions on the resolution.
“I congratulate you, I support you and I am grateful to live in the city that you have taken this stand,” said a supporter.
“This resolution creates a hostile living environment in the city for those women and their family that find it necessary to avail themselves of a medical procedure that is not only legal but truly none of this city Council’s business,” said a resident who opposed it.
It is a decision Alliance for a Better Utah said should not be made by a city.
“Talking about abortion, whether it’s for or against, it’s just totally outside the purview of what a city council should be focused on,” said Lauren Simpson, policy director for the organization.
