SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – On pretty much any given day, you’ll find Jill Dekle walking the halls at South Jordan Elementary.
“She’s been PTA president, she’s been a room mother to so many classrooms. She’s tutored, volunteered and helped so many kids,” Principal Ken Westwood says.
Jill’s husband sees that dedication.
“I’m always giving her a hard time because she puts in enough to do a full-time job,” Jeremiah Dekle says. “There are a lot of nights that she’s up until 4, 5 o’clock in the morning getting ready for events at school.”
Events like Teacher Appreciation Week with elaborate decorations, snacks, and gifts.
Fourth-grade teacher Kerrie Wardell says that acknowledgement goes a long way.
“We can do hard things as teachers if we’re appreciated. It really makes a difference.”
Her work is so appreciated, the teachers called an impromptu school-wide assembly. It was a chance to talk to kids about kindness and community, and the people who exemplify that.
We gave Jill Dekle a KSL High 5! As the students were thanking her with their own High 5s, we asked her why she does it.
“Teachers give so much to the classroom, their time, money, everything. That if I can, I’ll be there to help make their job a little easier.”
