Your Thermostat Should Be Set No Lower Than 78 Degrees In Summer, According To Energy.gov

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – How cool do you keep your house in the summer? If it’s lower than 78 degrees, it’s too cold.
At least that’s the advice from Energy.gov, which recommends people “lower the thermostat setting to 78 degrees only when you are at home and need cooling.”
Why?
The higher temperature will save energy and money, according to the site: “The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.”
The site suggests using a ceiling fan and ventilation strategies to cool your home.
Other recommendations include:
- Use bathroom fans to remove heat and humidity during showers
- Avoid placing TVs or lamps near the thermostat
- Avoid using an indoor oven during hot days
- Install efficient lighting that runs cooler
- Consider air drying dishes and clothes
