ST. GEORGE, Utah – Schools in the Washington County School District are going to be a little safer thanks to a donation of 100 touchless, infrared thermometers from a southern Utah company.
Representatives from St. George-based ZUMM made the donation at district headquarters Tuesday afternoon.
The district had already bought one thermometer — which retails for $70 — for each school, but officials said having extras will allow staff members to test more students quicker.
“This is such a big deal for us,” said Steven Dunham with the Washington County School District. “It really is. It’s huge.”
You can’t be safe enough this year, which is why the Washington County School District is happy to have more of these thermometer scanners. The donation will give each school two additional thermometers.
“We understand this isn’t something the school districts are going to be able to afford easily,” said ZUMM owner Robert Beatty. “With the COVID-19 thing, we re-tooled our factory to meet the call of thermometers. Touchless infrared thermometers are a needed item in our households and communities and the U.S.”
Beatty said the thermometers scans the body to detect a fever. Having a fever is one of the symptoms of COVID-19, but it doesn’t mean the person has the virus — just that an additional test may be needed.
ZUMM is hoping to get a thermometer scanner to every school in Utah, and schools in Washington County were the first in its effort to do so.
