SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Six additional Utahns have died from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 678.

Another 2,335 have tested positive, and the seven-day average for positive tests has climbed above 22%.

Currently, 446 people with COVID-19 are being treated in Utah hospitals.

Testing

The Utah Department of Health on Wednesday reported a total of 1,190,623 Utahns have been tested so far, which is an increase of 9,847 tests from yesterday.

Of those Utahns, a total of 139,720 of them have tested positive for COVID-19. That’s an increase of 2,335 cases since yesterday.

The rolling seven-day average for positive tests is 2,584 per day, and the rolling seven-day average for percent of positive laboratory tests is now 22.6%.

Hospitalizations

There are currently 446 people with COVID-19 who are hospitalized, and 182 of them are in intensive care units.

Another 20 patients are currently hospitalized as COVID-19 persons under investigation.

UDOH reports 75.8% of all ICU beds and 49.6% of all non-ICU beds are occupied.

The state recently added referral center ICU bed occupancy to its COVID-19 website.

“Referral Centers are the 16 hospitals in Utah with the capability to provide the best care for patients with COVID-19,” according to UDOH. “Because most patients are transferred to these facilities, their utilization is the best reflection of the true hospital capacity in Utah when looking at ICU beds.”

The ICU beds in those referral centers are now 82.3% full.

Utah’s ICU threshold is 85%.

“At about 69% overall ICU utilization, ICUs in Utah’s major hospitals with the ability to provide best care for COVID-19 patients begin to reach staffing capacity,” according to the health department. “Seventy-two percent use among all hospitals and 77% in Referral Center hospitals creates major strains on the healthcare system. When 85% capacity is reached, Utah will be functionally out of staffed ICU beds, indicating an overwhelmed hospital system.”
