Tenants don’t want bats in the Belvedere in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City woman says bats keep getting into the condo she rents.
Kim Cawdery lives at the Belvedere at 29 S. State Street.
The unit she rents faces east and, it just so happens, is close to a hole in the façade of the building. She says bats are getting in the building through that hole. Two made their way into her place Sunday night.
“I’ve been filming them,” Cawdery said Monday as she showed KSL TV cell phone video. “They’re out my window, like a hundred of them.”

She said she notified the building maintenance department several days ago, but since she’s a renter, not an owner, she says they ignored her claims.
Cawdery actually likes the bats — she thinks they’re pretty. But when two showed up in her home on one night, she took action.
“I was like, what do I do, there’s a bat in my apartment,” Cawdery said.
She opened the window to let the bat out, but a few minutes later, she heard another bat.
“I try to go to sleep, then out of the corner of my eye, there’s something crawling, another little baby,” she said.
“I stepped on it,” Cawdery added.
She said the bat then flew into her kitchen and landed in the sink.
Cawdery said a few other tenants have also had bats in their apartments. She said the landlord needs to fix the bat problem immediately.
We reached out to the management company for The Belvedere. They said they are aware of the problem and are addressing it.
Earlier this summer, the Utah Department of Health confirmed rabies in three bats. And, they say if you ever come in contact with one, you should report it.
