‘A More Perfect Union’: Upholding the Constitution

Sep 27, 2022, 6:47 PM | Updated: 7:09 pm

SALT LAKE CITY — Many people from across the political spectrum believe the Constitution is in crisis. In the upcoming KSL Special ‘A More Perfect Union’, Boyd Matheson takes a closer look at how we as individuals can uphold the guiding principles of the Constitution.

“The Constitution is the guide which I never can abandon,” Matheson said. “Those are the words of George Washington and now some 200 years later it’s easy to see how America has lost its way because we have lost focus on those foundational principles of unity and civic charity.”

Matheson visited with Joe Lieberman, a former lawmaker, teacher, and judge to seek understanding about how we can create a more perfect union.

“What’s the one thing you wish that citizens across the country would think about relating to the Constitution?” Boyd asked.

Lieberman said, “So, I think the most important thing is for people across the country to appreciate how fortunate – really blessed we are to live in a country that’s been guided by this document, the American Constitution that created our government and enshrined our liberties.”

“So it starts with truly each of us in our own homes,” Government and law educator Sharon McMahon said. “And the way we speak to our children, the way we frame conversations around the dinner table. That is truly where it begins.”

Former U.S. Circuit Judge Thomas B. Griffith said, “If you want to see the way we can best support and defend the Constitution, it was summarized in President Oak’s talk. He said, ‘We seek to moderate and unify, that describes what the Constitution requires.’”

The Constitution also requires an informed citizenry that understands their rights and responsibilities.

Griffith said, “We live in a society with other people, and we need to recognize that any right, taken to an extreme can actually do some harm. So, this is where the real tough work comes. And this is where the tough work of the courts come in, legislature comes in.”

You can watch the rest of “A More Perfect Union” on KSL Saturday at 4 p.m. right after General Conference.
