Utahns urged to stop outside watering for the season

SALT LAKE CITY — With the weather getting cooler, now is the time to turn off your watering systems.
Many Utahns haven’t, and it’s impacting our water conservation.
The Jordan Valley Water conservancy district said when it gets below 70 degrees outside, your lawn, and plants don’t need as much water.
Cythina Bee with the conservancy district said yards and plants go into hibernation this time of year so they get enough water naturally.
Bee said on average a homeowner’s annual water use is about 65% of outside watering. She said is a lot when you are only supposed to be watering outside for a few months.
Most water waste happens in the fall she added.
“People are good about slowly ramping up their watering, but then we forget to scale it back down as the season ends,” Bee said.
She called it crucial for us to scale it back.
“We have been in a drought for years, and we hope that this is the year that it breaks, but even if it does, we will still have to conserve so that we can rebuild the supply that we used through the mega drought,” Bee said.
