Shots fired during road rage incident in Kaysville, police say

DAVIS COUNTY, Utah — A man is in custody after allegedly shooting at another car in a road rage incident on Interstate 15 Monday.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers said this chain of events could have led to serious injuries or even death.
“Honestly, I didn’t think my car got shot at first,” said Shailee Brimhall, the victim of the shooting.
Brimhall said she was just driving through Kaysville on I-15 when she came up on a slower SUV.
“(The SUV driver) was going significantly under the speed limit, so when the double yellow lines broke again, I passed him,” Brimhall explained.
It was the move that supposedly set off the other driver, who allegedly was right on her bumper.
“One of the times, I tapped on my brakes to let him know he needs to slow down,” Brimhall said. “And all of a sudden, he crossed the double white line in the HOV lane and sped up and (fired) five shots to my car.”
“They penetrated the window and shattered ’em,” explained UHP Sgt. Rick Shrader.

Investigators said after the woman pulled over and called 911, UHP troopers spotted the SUV, followed it to the Maverik on Parrish Lane in Centerville and confronted the people inside.
Police said the shooter had two children in the back seat.
“We’re hearing stories of flipping up debris, tailgating, brake-checking childish stuff,” Shrader said.
Troopers said although it turned out to be a high-powered pellet gun, it could have done some harm as it left three holes and shattered glass on Brimhall’s car.
“(Pellet guns) can definitely cause injury, and we just lucked out at this time,” Shrader said.
Brimhall is just grateful that nobody was hurt during this encounter.
“I have a 6-year-old, and if he would have been in the car, that’s his seat,” Brimhall said.
But it’s still an ordeal that’s left her in disbelief.
“It was just like, drive-by shooting,” Brimhall expressed.
In the affidavit, police found a black and brown pellet handgun along with multiple containers of marijuana. Police also found a grinder and a glass pipe with burnt residue in it.
The suspect, Travis Leroy Peterson, 51, has valid medical marijuana.
Peterson was booked into the Davis County Jail for two felony charges of aggravated assault, one felony charge of criminal mischief, a misdemeanor charge of use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and an infraction of cardholder smoking cannabis.
