Police find 24 firearms after arresting man for previous offenses

KANE COUNTY, Utah — A man is in police custody after trying to avoid arrest in a cabin filled with firearms on Sunday.

David Scott Mooneyham, 43, was booked into the Kane County Jail for 24 3rd-degree felony counts of possessing a firearm by a restricted person, misdemeanor charges of use or possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of controlled substance, and failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, according to court documents.

Mooneyham was wanted for violating protective orders multiple times from August to November, along with weapon possession violations in Washington County.

According to court documents, Hurricane Police told the Kane County Sherriff’s Office about Mooneyham’s family cabin he visits in their jurisdiction and the truck he drives.

Hurricane PD also warned that Mooneyham was prohibited from owning firearms and there were firearms in the cabin.

Kane County Sherriff deputies obtained a search warrant for the cabin and the truck, and prepared to raid the cabin, according to court documents.

“When Kane County SWAT arrived before they could begin to call (Mooneyham) out of the residence over a loudspeaker (the) suspect fled on foot,” reads the affidavit.

Deputies chased Mooneyham on foot, commanding him to stop and identifying themselves as Kane County Sherriff deputies.

Mooneyham ran for about 500 feet in the snow while barefoot until he reached thicker vegetation, where he stopped and was placed into police custody without further incident, according to court documents.

Police searched the cabin and found 24 firearms in an area that Mooneyham could access. Police identified the firearms as rifles and handguns, but didn’t detail how many of each were found.

According to court documents, police also found “suspected marijuana and a pop can made into a device to smoke the marijuana.”

Mooneyham is also facing preliminary charges of 21 misdemeanor charges of violation of a protective order, three misdemeanor charges of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, and an additional three 3rd-degree felony charges of possessing a firearm by a restricted person.

According to court documents, the three dangerous weapons he had were a compound bow, a large knife, and a machete.
