SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Many know Steve Carell for his comedic roles in films like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and NBC’s “The Office,” but now he’s making the switch to dramas.
In his latest film, “Welcome to Marwen,” he’s portraying the true story of a man named Mark who uses a unique form of art to recover from a brutal attack.
Film Critic Jimmy Martin sat down Carell and the film’s director, Robert Zemeckis, to talk about the movie.
“I stumbled on the documentary,” Zemeckis said. “Then I obviously, from there, went to go find out who this guy was.”
“I was just fascinated by his story,” he added.
He said the lead character has an amazing imagination that worlds through the photographs he takes.
“He’s completely cognizant of the fact that this world that he’s created seems odd to some people,” Carell said. “He kind of relishes it. He sort of loves the oddity of it, and he loves the way people respond to it.”
Carell said “Welcome to Marwen” helped him learn that people can go through real hardships in the world and not be bitter or cynical.
“It’s a really cynical world we live in now,” Carell said. “To have a voice like that out there, it’s heartwarming.”
Martin said it’s a beautiful movie, a lot of fun, and a heartfelt story that gives hope.
He also recommended watching the documentary, “Marwencol.”
