Spring break is right around the corner here in Utah. Many of us are feeling spring fever right now, and if you’re still looking to book a trip, now is the time.
Here are some tips on finding those deals while they last:
- Master the Search: Use google flights and other search engines. And look ahead — typically flights increase inside 30 days until travel. Consider smaller airports, not just the major ones.
- Book Now: Don’t procrastinate. Standby fares aren’t readily accessible anymore, and airlines have scheduled price increases at 21 days, 14 days and 7 days ahead of travel.
- Buy and Then Decide: U.S. law gives you 24 hours to cancel a flight reservation longer than a week out. Some deals are gone quickly — in just 12-24 hours sometimes — so book, and you can cancel if you need to.
As for other airline tips, we spoke with Utah blogger and YouTuber Melea Johnson, an expert on money-saving strategies.
“They’ll usually have a sale on a Tuesday, Wednesday and a Thursday. And the best days to travel are usually Tuesday and a Wednesday with a flight home on a Saturday. So instead of going a whole week, maybe you fly a Tuesday to a Saturday instead of flying on a Sunday in order to save a few hundred dollars.”
Next, how about deals at your destination? Here’s something you may not have considered: Use websites and resources in cities where you plan to travel.
“Whether it’s places you want to eat, restaurants you want to go to, activities, Legoland tickets have been on there before. You can head to Costco and get deal at Costcos in that area. So maybe our Costcos won’t have the tickets or discounts…but the Costco in that city will have them. So you can get discounts to places or activities that you or your family might want to do.”
And if you can adjust your travel days, sometimes that can pay off. There are only so many flights during spring break.
