SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – There’s a busy weekend ahead in Utah’s capital city, with huge events that will attract hundreds of thousands of people.
The Salt Lake City Greek Festival, FanX Comic Convention, the Utah State Fair, President Russell M. Nelson’s birthday celebration, the Utah Jazz & Roots Festival, and the University of Utah football game are all happening the same weekend.
These are just the major events. There are other concerts, plays and performances happening downtown as well. In all, about 200,000 people are expected to show up, and that makes for a big economic impact.
“People make a day of it,” said Dee Brewer, executive director of the Downtown Alliance. “They come, they shop, they dine out. They avail themselves of the wonderful restaurants downtown.”
“Weekends like this are what make all the great restaurants viable in downtown,” he added. “It used to be that you chose a weekend to come downtown; now you have choices every weekend about what you’re going to do.”
The Downtown Alliance calculated that this weekend alone will bring $19 million to local businesses and restaurants. That’s not including hotel stays.
These busy weekends are the new normal now that Salt Lake City has established itself as an entertainment destination.
