OAKLAND, Calif. – Passengers aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship will continue disembarking Tuesday and go into quarantine.
At least 21 people on board tested positive for COVID-19. The other passengers are set to be quarantined for 14 days after leaving the ship. However, authorities are not letting everyone off at once.
One of those passengers is Monica Achter, of Layton, who has been on board the ship since Feb. 21. She said she’s hoping she’ll be able to get the quarantine process started, but she doesn’t yet know where she’ll be sent.
The Grand Princess cruise ship docked in Oakland on Monday, and those who needed immediate medical care were the first to disembark. According to a statement from Princess Cruise Lines, the process of getting everyone off the boat will take multiple days.
Achter is waiting on board before being transferred to a military base where she’ll be tested for COVID-19. She said her family and friends are currently spread out in three rooms on the same deck of the cruise ship, but it’s not clear yet if they’ll all be sent to the same military base for quarantine.
“My two weeks isn’t worth anybody else’s life,” she said, “so I am happy to do it.”
Achter will be transported to one of three facilities located in California, Texas and Georgia. She said she hopes she’ll be sent to the same facility as the rest of her family.
