SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Two California women have been charged with stealing $104,200 in designer bags and purses from a Salt Lake City store.
Court documents filed Monday said Akaija M’shea-Beverli Elder, 18, and Akaila Maisunxian Elder, 20, were charged with aggravated robbery in the alleged theft.
The women are from Fairfield, California, but documents did not indicate if they are related.
Charging documents said the women were at The Lady Bag, located at 149 South Main in Salt Lake, on Nov. 26 when one of the women distracted an employee and the other cut security cords off several bags and tried to pull a purse of a shelf.
The employee told one of the suspects to stop and, “the female sprayed her in the face with pepper spray.”
The documents said the suspects grabbed the designer purses and ran into the passenger seats of a Dodge that fled the area.
The Lady Bag’s website showed it sells purses and bags designed by Louis Vuitton, Prada and others that cost as much as $4,895.
A SLC police detective watched surveillance video from the robbery and posted a notice to identify the women. A California Highway Patrol investigator contacted SLC police and identified the two suspects. The court document said the women had been arrested in California in December for a similar crime.
Akaila Elder is being held at the Weber County Jail on unrelated credit card theft and drug charges.
Police issued an arrest warrant for Akaija Elder who is believed to be in California, the documents said.
