OGDEN, Utah – Officials with the Lantern House in Ogden reported 48 people tested positive for COVID-19 and two have lost their lives.

Over 220 tests were performed at the shelter, and 48 tested positive for the coronavirus, including 37 single men, nine single women and a single mother with her child. Officials said less than 10% of the 48 were asymptomatic.

“The Lantern House staff will be closely monitoring each of these individuals during their time in quarantine,” said John D. Patterson, Lantern House board chairman. “While we are a homeless shelter, not a medical facility, the Weber-Morgan Health Department helped us with resources to hire additional staff to provide the needed care and monitoring. If the health of any of the individuals deteriorates, we have been directed to contact emergency medical.”

Patterson said a senior male resident and a single mother with a child who were staying at the Lantern House lost their lives. The child has been placed with the woman’s next of kin.

“Both individuals were confirmed positive for the virus but the cause of death is still under investigation,” Patterson said. “We sincerely appreciate our dedicated staff and volunteers who have been tireless in their efforts to keep everyone at the Lantern House safe and adapt quickly, hour by hour to the situation. Their preparedness has been instrumental in keeping COVID-19 at bay during these past few months.”

About the Lantern House:

“Serving men, women, children and their pets, Lantern House is the largest homeless shelter in northern Utah. Though we continue to adapt to the growing needs of our clients and community, we remain committed to providing food, shelter, and critical services to the homeless community.”
