The Oregon State Police Department also released a statement, detailing what occurred on Interstate 84 before the arrest.
The statement read in part:
“Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle near milepost 250 westbound and Etherington failed to yield and a pursuit ensued. The suspect attempted to avoid having his tires spiked near milepost 218, turned around and began traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, striking an OSP patrol vehicle. Etherington then exited Interstate 84 and travelled cross country in open fields.
With the assistance of Umatilla Tribal Police Department and Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the suspect was contained in the open fields before crashing into a ditch. Etherington was taken into custody without further incident.”
Oregon State police said Etherington was transported to a local hospital before being taken to Umatilla County Jail for outstanding felony warrants for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault from SLCPD.
“He was also lodged on local charges of Felony Elude, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, Criminal Mischief and Hit and Run,” read the statement.
The Salt Lake City stabbing incident occurred at an apartment complex near 1450 South and West Temple early Wednesday morning.
Police wrote in a press release that Etherington attacked a woman at the complex before turning on the woman’s boyfriend, who arrived at the scene and tried to intervene.
“It is alleged Etherington stabbed the 29-year-old man multiple times and then fled the area in a vehicle,” read the release.
The victim and his girlfriend were then taken to an area hospital by a third party.
On Wednesday, police said the 29-year-old was in critical but stable condition.
“At approximately 5:06 a.m. on February 2, 2022, an outside agency notified the SLCPD that they located the suspect’s vehicle near 3000 West and 2900 South. Law enforcement observed the suspect get into a vehicle and leave. Law enforcement followed the vehicle for a distance until SLCPD officers arrived in the area to assume incident command.
Police said Etherington refused to stop and fled from SLCPD officers.
“SLCPD officers terminated the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle because of Etherington’s reckless and dangerous driving and weather conditions,” the release stated.
An update on the victim’s condition was not immediately available Friday.
