Unified police officer hit by fleeing car; suspect in custody

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — An officer with the Unified Police Department was struck by a fleeing vehicle Tuesday morning.
UPD Sgt. Nick Renfro said the officer suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK.
The incident started in the area of 500 East and 3300 South when the officer attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle that had no license plate.

However, Renfro said the vehicle sped off and police didn’t pursue it.
A bit later, the officer found the car, thought it was abandoned and went to check on it, which is when the driver took off again and hit the officer.
Police chased the suspect to the area of State Street and 3900 South when the suspect crashed and attempted to flee on foot. Renfro said the suspect was detained on scene and is now in custody.
He added it’s currently unknown if the suspect meant to hit the officer or he was just trying to get away from the area.
