Police: Man arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at someone in Sugarhouse apartment

SALT LAKE CITY — A 33-year-old suspect is in police custody after allegedly shooting his gun inside a Sugarhouse apartment building Sunday afternoon.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the 33-year-old man was arrested for possession of a firearm in the Sugarmont Apartments at approximately 1 p.m.
SLC PD officers were near the scene for an unrelated call when notified of a disturbance inside the apartment complex.
“When officers spoke with people living at the apartment complex, they told officers they heard at least one gunshot from one of the top floors,” reads the SLC PD statement.
Officers on the scene called for backup, set up a containment zone, and told apartment residents to shelter in place.
Police found the suspect’s apartment unit and attempted to communicate with him, according to the police statement.
“During the investigation, officers learned the suspect pointed his gun at least one person,” reads the statement.”The suspect exited his apartment unit while holding a gun. Officers immediately ordered the man to drop the weapon and surrender peacefully.”

We are now investigating this incident as an aggravated assault.
Detectives remain on scene. There were no injuries.

The suspect was taken into police custody and claimed someone else was in the apartment with him, but officers couldn’t find anyone else. During the arrest, officers seized the suspect’s gun.
Because of the allegations of the suspect pointing the gun at another person, police are investigating the incident as an aggravated assault case, according to police.
No injuries were reported, and all street closures and shelter-in-place orders were lifted at 1:13 p.m.
