Truck driver slams into home; knocks baby from crib

Apr 23, 2018, 6:01 PM | Updated: 9:48 pm

NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah – A bad crash in unincorporated Davis County sent a 5-month-old baby to the hospital, but the baby wasn’t in the vehicle, she was asleep in her crib at the time. Authorities said a truck crashed right into her bedroom.

The crash happened early Sunday morning around 2 a.m. near Redwood Road and 400 South.

Before the crash, an officer with the North Salt Lake Police Department saw the same truck heading north on Redwood Road driving over 100 mph. The officer didn’t give chase but notified other agencies to be on watch.  Soon after, word reached police that the same truck had crashed into the home.

Detective Ty Berger said the truck ended up on a private dirt road that led to a house.

“As it tried to make the wide turn at a high rate of speed it was unable to maintain its cohesiveness to the ground and careened into the home,” said Det. Berger.

The truck slammed into a bedroom at the corner of the house. Inside that bedroom was the baby, sound asleep. The crash caused her to be thrown from her crib.

“The infant, in her crib, was propelled from the accident about 20 feet,” said Det. Berger.

Stephan Briones, age 25

The baby girl was taken to the hospital – miraculously with only minor injuries.
Authorities said it could have been much worse, but the driver must have slowed down to make a turn.

“Had he hit [the house] at 100 miles an hour, it would be significantly worse,” said Det. Berger.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Stephan Briones, wasn’t badly hurt either. He was checked out at the hospital and then booked into jail.

Briones was facing charges of reckless driving, criminal mischief and DUI. Authorities said a breathalyzer test showed he was at twice the legal limit.
